The End of Education

The title of this blog, "The End of Education," carries a double meaning: that of the purpose, or telos, of education, and that of the collapse of real education as we are witnessing in our country in nearly all sectors of education, pre-school through higher education. I have given much thought to the purpose of education, primarily in my role as teacher for my four children. In many ways the education they received was superior to my public school education. I had the notion that public school education had deteriorated since my schooldays but had no idea how much until I began substitute teaching. I set up this blog as something of a dumping ground for my observations on education in the public schools. Every day I come home with stories, mostly sad, of children ill-served by the school they attend. But this is a commentary not only on public education but on the wider culture of which public schools are a part. Topics will appear somewhat random depending on what is
